Your mother must have had to shut down so early in life. Even though she had good parents and a happy early childhood, that evidently wasn’t enough to protect her future choices in relationships, after her uncle raped her. The tragedy is that she had no voice to ask for help, as most children didn’t in those days. How different her life might have been if there had been some place for her to seek help!

Tremendous! Poignant and so sad. Wonder how many other war brides were caught in similar soul-destroying situations. I can see why you are recommending podcasts. I feel this works very well, in this case, but most writers don’t have your voice, clarity or pacing. I’ve suffered through podcasts where inept readers murdered their beautiful words or galloped through chapters as if trying to cram as much as possible into the allotted time. Loved the sound effects and the song at the end. Thanks, Penelope James
