Some of you may already know about this news, but in case you don’t, or in case you feel like sharing my good news, guess who won a GOLD MEDAL for “NO TEARS FOR MY FATHER’?
I’m stoked. I entered the 2014 Readers Favorite Book Awards months back. When I was named a finalist, I was thrilled. But never did I expect to take out top honours in the “Grief/Hardship” category. What a buzz for the writer of her first full-length memoir. Here’s the official certficate:Yes, there’s an Awards ceremony and I’ll be attending that, along with other happy authors coming from as far away as Australia and Europe. It’s being held in Miami on November 22nd. Really looking forward to it too. I tossed up going. After all, it’s expensive to fly from Canada and stay 2 nights, but the family said “Don’t even think about not going! You might never get another chance to do something like this?” I’m not quite too sure how to take that statement i.e. Are they hinting I might never write another award-winning memoir? Or that I might not live long enough to write any other book of any kind? Of course, both are a possibility, but I’m not going there.
So, while we speak of other books, my second memoir is finished, printed, and ready for readers! I’m thrilled with how it looks. But I’m not thrilled with the fact that despite 3-4 edits, using editing programs as well as human editors, it still has typos! GRRRR! However, I just have to hope my readers will forgive me and not read the book with their error-noting pens in their hands. I attended an intensive critiquing course this summer, and I must say it took the pleasure out of reading others’ works when we sit there with pen in hand, looking for errors, thinking of ways to make the story better etc etc. I quickly came to the conclusion it’s much nicer to be a writer than an editor. Editing another’s work prevented me from fully enjoying their stories. As necessary as it is to give other writers feedback, this type of thing is not for me!
We are a bit behind trying to get my new book, “LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF” onto my website. It’s a complicated process, adding both printed and ebook versions, along with the e-commerce links or purchasers, and way beyond my skill level. I have to rely on my daughter’s boyfriend to do this for me and he’s so busy he can’t find the time. So, in the meantime, if you just can’t wait to get your signed, printed copy, email me from my website and I’ll tell you how to do it. I also have the eBook versions for your Kindles, iPads, Kobos or whatever electronic readers you use. So just ask!
By the way, if you’re telling others about me and my books and they want to know where to buy them, I’d love it if you could send them directly to my website rather than Amazon and the rest. In case you don’t know why, here’s why: when you buy directly from an author’s website, the author receives your full payment. When you buy from Amazon or the rest, those online sites take a commission, as high as 30%. Worse yet, for us Canadian writers, if we don’t have an ITIN from the US IRS, those sites have to with-hold a further 30% for the IRS. Getting the ITIN is a pain. Slow and complicated.
Now when you buy directly from the author, me, I don’t have to pay anyone but myself. And when you’re self-published as I am, that’s important because those books cost me a good dollar to publish. On top of that, I have had flyers, posters and other promotional materials made. So in the end, the profit on my book is very minimal. And when you buy it from some other distributor, it’s next to nothing! So folks, lend me a hand here and please buy your books from my website and send your friends here too.
Otherwise, please check the EVENTS page on my website for upcoming BOOK SIGNINGS. I have 3 in October: Simcoe, Ancaster and Burlington. I’m also being a “human library” at the ALDERSHOT Branch of Burlington Library this coming Saturday, Sept. 27th, 3-4pm. Come out and see me! It’s lonely sitting in a big room with no-one to talk to. Can’t sell any books there but I can do readings .. and meet you in the parking lot later LOL!
Last thing before I go to run the first of this season’s memoir workshops at the local library, you know what I’m going to be asking you for once you’ve read my book, don’t you. REVIEWS!! Yes, please. I’ll need those to help “LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF” find other readers. And those who want to know how a victim of abuse recovers and moves on to find her strengths and enjoy a rewarding life will want to read my book. So please, when you’ve read the book, leave me a review at Goodreads, Amazon, this website and anywhere else where readers go looking for a good read. From what readers have told me so far, “LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF” is a good read. I hope you’ll agree and tell the world so!
Bye for now!
