Your Memoir. What is it, if not a “selfie in words”?
So many people these days are talking about writing their memoirs, of telling all, showing all, laying their souls bare in books and eBooks, leaving themselves open to criticism, ridicule or praise and love … exactly what we do when we post those “selfies” on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or wherever. Selfies are quite the rage, especially amongst the younger set. And memoirs are quite the rage amongst those of us who lived a bit longer and have stories or “life tales” to share.
But not everyone will have the luck (or maybe time left) to score a publishing contract. Or they may not have the finances needed to self-publish an actual printed book. (Thank heaven for the relatively inexpensive way of both publishing and reading books these days ie. eBooks). And some folks may just not know how to even start writing a memoir. Is what they’re thinking of writing a memoir or an autobiography? What’s the difference between the two? Is there only one way to write a memoir? And who’s going to want to read it? How will they find readers etc etc. The questions are endless, and there are answers to all of those questions in the many books now available from seasoned memoir writers and editors … if have the time to read them all.
Is there a faster route to get you started on writing that selfie in words? YES! My newest project is a magazine for memoir writers, titled “MEMOIRABILIA”. Using my own experience and what I share with members of my memoir writing workshops, along with information supplied by other facilitators I’ve met online and in person, I’ve now launched the first (inaugural) edition of “MEMOIRABILIA”. You can purchase either or both a printed and/or digital version of the magazine directly from my website at http://www.vigaboland.com/store By the way, you can preview MEMOIRABILIA at this link:
I’m delighted with how beautiful the printed issue looks. It’s 8.5″ X 11″, easy to read, with superb coloured photos. Price is $6.50 USD, + shipping. I must tell you now, I’m not making a penny on sales at this price. That’s what the magazine cost me to produce, purchase and have shipped to me. But that’s okay, because this is a labour of love for me. I want to help other writers do what I did: write their own memoir, or maybe memoirs. It’s a wonderful feeling to have readers tell you how much they liked your book and to hear they are recommending it to others. And while I mention that, for those of you who may have forgotten, I have written and published a second memoir, my story of recovery and self-discovery after sexual abuse, titled “LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF”. You can now preview a portion of that book right on my website at this link: http://vigaboland.com/learning-love-recovery-abuse/ I’ve also set up a separate site just for that book at http://www.learningtolovemyself.ca
Back to Memoirabilia: I’m accepting submissions from writers for future issues. Like I said, I want to help other writers do what I did. You can find details about how and what to submit at http://www.memoirabilia.ca Not everyone has a long enough story to write a book, but many of us have little stories, vignettes, “mini memoirs” that we like to share with others. Submit them to MEMOIRABILIA and you might just see yourself in a future edition. In fact, I’m planning a “Special Edition” for the fall which will be just “Your Life Tales, Your Way”. SUBMISSIONS for consideration can be sent to me directly at this email address: firstname.lastname@example.org (Watch the spelling!) However, if you’re thinking of submitting, I strongly suggest you purchase at least an electronic edition of the mag from my website to see what we think is good enough to include.
What else can readers expect from Memoirabilia? Guest editorials, interviews with Memoir writers, book reviews, and of course, tips, hints, advice. So that’s it for this round of my blog, now renamed, hopefully for the last time, as “Vigaland” … my world of books and writing. Hope you’ll stop by and check out my newly overhauled site and pick up your copy of Memoirabilia, or if you don’t have it yet, a copy of my book, “LEARNING TO LOVE MYSELF”. That new book is getting some great reviews. Check the website REVIEW PAGE to see what others are saying about it.
