Hello there and welcome to the 2018 series of Vigaland Podcasts with author and book reviewer, Viga Boland.
Unlike my podcasts of 2017, which introduced listeners to true stories about abuse in its various forms through my book reviews, this new series is based on that explosive expose by celebrities of sexual and other harrassment that stunned TV viewers worldwide in October 2017, and gave birth to the now familiar #MeToo Campaign. I think very few of us are unaware of what happened then, and in the months following and continuing now into 2018. It was awesome to see victims of abuse in the workplace and the home finally speak “out from under” as I had urged people to do back in 2013 when I published my memoir “No Tears for my Father”. If you who are listening to this podcast have yet to read my book, you can purchase it in digital and softcover format from Amazon or my personal website at www.vigaboland.com
Immediately after the Harvey Weinstein accusations came to light, Facebook,Twitter and other social networking sites were flooded with posts by victims saying #MeToo! I immediately reached out on Facebook to see if any of my contacts and friends there now had also found the courage to share their #MeToo true story. About 20 people did and sent me their stories to publish in a new book. Unfortunately time and my energy ran out but I didn’t want to disappoint those who had contributed. So now, with their permission, I have decided to podcast their stories; most are short; some are longer. But I will share them all with you over this new series of Vigaland Podcasts on the topic of #MeToo.
What became apparent as I read the stories, and as you will hear, is the differences between the degrees of abuse of harrassment. Some listeners might find themselves thinking “Well that was no biggie!” Well just keep this in mind as you listen: we are all very different, and what might not seem like much to one person can be devastating to another.
It struck me as I wrote this podcast that I’ll be airing this first episode on February 1st. February…the love month…the month of Valentines, sweethearts and promises of forever. But as I read more #MeToo stories, both from my contributors and in the paper, I can’t help but ask “where is the love?” Where is the love, consideration, courtesy we all have a right to expect in our careers, our schools, our homes? How many with whom we interact daily know the difference between love and lust? How many think they are entitled to take what they want just because they want it? And when will those people learn that once you take something of value, like self-respect, from another, it can take a lifetime for that person to love herself or himself again?
There are far too many of us who have kept silent for fear of losing our jobs, our friends, the love of our family, or simply for the fear of not being believed. Well the time has come for that to end. I invite any of you who will be following this Vigaland #MeToo series to join us and speak out from under abuse and harrassment. Leave your comments, reactions, stories on this blog page.
Let the world know that #MeToo applies to YOU too! Thanks for listening.
