PODCASTING YOUR BOOK
A couple of weeks back I had the pleasure of presenting humour writer, Terry Fallis, to members and friends of the Canadian Authors Association at the Turner Park Branch of the Hamilton Public Library. Terry, a two-time winner of the coveted Stephen Leacock Award for Humour, kept the packed room of listeners in stitches. He is not just a gifted writer, but a fantastic and thoroughly entertaining speaker.
When I visited Terry’s website prior to the evening, I learned something more about him: he’s totally into using the latest technology to promote his books and himself. You see, Terry Fallis PODCAST his entire book, “POLES APART”, chapter by chapter, on his website!
“Why?” I asked Terry at the presentation. “Why would you give your whole book away like that?”
“Why not?” Terry smiled back at me.
“Well, if you give your book away like that, then aren’t you going to kill your sales of the book?”
“On the contrary,” Terry replied. “Folks actually do both. They listen to the podcast AND they buy the book.”
I couldn’t get what Terry said out of my head. I wondered, “Could I podcast my book? Is it hard?”
I began researching and found this site: BLUBRRY According to what I read there, if I blog using WordPress, I can integrate podcasting into my site using Blubrry’s technology. Once installed, it’s as easy as writing a blog with a big difference in its final reach: via iTunes (if they accept my podcast) and other podcasting sites, I can tap into an even larger audience than I reach now with just my books and ebooks!
“What do I have to lose by trying it?” I asked myself. If Terry Fallis is right, the answer is one word: “Nothing!”
The oft-repeated adage is that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Well, like Terry said, “Why not?” I’m a firm believer that if I stop learning, I’ve started dying in earnest. So with that in mind, this old dog is about to try PODCASTING her book (s). Like Terry, I’m going to begin with my latest memoir, “VOICE FROM AN URN” , available from my website in both printed and digital formats for all e-readers.
I have the first podcast ready to go. It’s short and will introduce you to the reason for writing “VOICE FROM AN URN”. Stay tuned. My next blog post will be my first PODCAST!
