Why? What’s the big deal? The big deal isn’t so much the book launch: I’ve done two of those before with “No Tears for my Father” and “Learning to Love Myself”. What’s going to make this old girl’s heart race is seeing classmates from over 50 years ago and trying to recognize them! Heaven knows it was bad enough writing the book and struggling to remember the names of the many nuns and teachers who patrolled our halls. I had to make up names all over the place. I can just hear classmates saying “I don’t remember any Sister XXX”. Well of course you don’t: I tried to capture her essence but forgot her name! So crucify me.
Now I tried to wriggle out of those kinds of comments by saying at the beginning of the book that I’ve most likely messed up, and from what I’ve been told so far by classmates who’ve already read the book, I sure have done that. Oh well, again, it’s about the “essence”, the “spirit” of those Ladies of Loretto we were trying so hard to become. Well at least some of us were trying to be ladies of Loretto.
But now, here’s the thing that’s really got me about this launch: I set up the Facebook page for Loretto grads of 1960 – 1965 over a year ago. Only one person “liked” it. I was alone for months and kept asking for help, input, memories I could include. None came. So I threw caution to the wind, made up some names, disguised others and wrote and printed the book. Then, the current Loretto College School got in touch and wanted to get behind the book. I was thrilled out of my mind. They’ve organized this amazing launch; so far 60 guests are attending; and now, old classmates are coming out of the woodwork, finding my page on Facebook and sharing some fantastically funny stories that should be in “THE LADIES OF LORETTO”. GAH! Where were you when I needed you?
Well, for now que sera sera. (Is that how you spell it?) I shall go forward to this launch, and during my talk, I’ll share some of the wonderful stories they’ve now shared with me . Then I’m going to suggest if they have any more stories, to sign up for this blog and post their stories in the comments section. Or they can also comment on the Ladies of Loretto Page on this site. And if I collect enough great stories, perhaps my next publication can be an anthology written by … former ladies of Loretto!
I must apologize to all who subscribe to my regular blog here: you’re going to be receiving posts from the Loretto Blog as well as the regular blog. I can’t do much about that. I really don’t want to start a whole separate blog for this. I just have to hope you’ll enjoy whatever stories I share with you in the future about those Ladies of Loretto. And how do you subscribe to both or either blog? Look for the SUBSCRIBE TO VIGALAND BLOG on the home page …and throughout my website at http://www.vigaboland.com
Coming up in a future post from the LADIES OF LORETTO BLOG? A link to download an mp3 of “Blue is the flag of Loretto”, our school song from over 50 years ago.
